Conclusion: A great yet scary read. Hayder has done it, again.

boek 130: The thief, Ruth Rendell
Polly has the habit of stealing small items from people when they upset or make her angry. This will lead her down a frightening path of events…
Conclusion: Great novella by a wonderful writer.

boek 131: The wish list, Eoin Colfer
Meg Finn is killed in an explosion after a botched robbery, but is sent back to earth to make amends with her intended victim to decide her fate in the afterlife. Is Meg capable of being nice? That’s the only thing that will safe her from hell.
Conclusion: Black comedy at it’s best, most enjoyed by those with an open mind and a vivid imagination.

boek 132: Belofte onder het Zuiderkruis, Lydia Rood
Speciaal voor Dokters van de Wereld, Simavi en AMREF Flying Doctors is de bekende Nederlandse schrijfster Lydia Rood naar Kenia gereisd om inspiratie op te doen voor een heel bijzondere Doktersroman. Een roman waarmee de drie organisaties op een originele manier willen illustreren wat gezondheidszorg in ontwikkelingslanden betekent en hoe noodzakelijk deze nog altijd is. Beleef het leven van zuster Charity, dokter Winston, zuster Diana en hun patiënten.
Conclusie: Als doktersroman aardig, als actie briljant.

boek 133: Mijn leven als geisha, Mineko Iwasaki
Mineko Iwasaki was volgens sommigen de meest succesvolle geisha van haar generatie. Tegen de principes in vertelt zij in dit boek over het echte leven binnen de geisha cultuur; de mooie maar ook de minder mooie kanten.
Conclusie: Indrukwekkend boek, helaas is de taal niet zo mooi als het verhaal.

boek 134: Come together, Josie Lloyd & Emlyn Rees
Jack is 27 and a so-called happy single. Amy is 25 and desperate for a man. When they meet, their lifes wil never be the same again. We read along, switching from his point of view to hers…
Conclusion: A chicklit classic.

boek 135: The Christmas mystery, Jostein Gaarder
Joachim finds a faded, handmade Advent calendar in a bookstore on the eve of December first, and begs his father to let him take it home. The next morning, when he opens the calendar’s first door, Joachim discovers not just the expected picture but also a tightly folded piece of paper, the first installment of the fantastic tale of a little girl’s journey through time and space to be present at the Nativity. Soon the girl’s story is making unexpected intrusions into Joachim’s own life, and he races to solve the mystery of the calendar before Christmas Eve.
Conclusion: This book is both very meaningful and very sweet.

boek 136: The Ersatz Elevator: Book The Sixth, Lemony Snicket and Brett Helquist
Part six of the Baudelaire saga. Within the chapters of this book, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire encounter a darkened staircase, a red herring, some friends in a dire situation, three mysterious initials, a liar with an evil scheme, a secret passageway, and parsley soda.
Conclusion: Still nice, but not as surprising as the first five books.

boek 137: De nakomeling, Nida Oudejans
De enige bestendige factoren in Lex’ leven zijn haar zus Titia, haar ouders en, in zekere zin, haar broer Sander. Lex wil alles voor Titia doen, dus is het vanzelfsprekend dat ze met haar mee op vakantie gaat, al is het naar Nepal, en al betreft het een groepsreis. Er zijn voor Titia is immers haar bestaansrecht…
Conclusie: Familiedrama in boekvorm, leuk geschreven, soms herkenbaar, maar af en toe ook erg over the top.

boek 138: The changeover, Margaret Mahy
When her little brother seems to become possessed by an evil spirit, fourteen-year-old Laura seeks the help of the strangely compelling older boy at school who she is convinced has supernatural powers. Het life will change by this, quite a lot.
Conclusion: A fine example of a romantic teenage witch story.

boek 139: Coraline, Neil Gaiman
Coraline, who is bored and likes exploring, finds a hidden alternate world in her new home. There, a new mother would love to take care of her, but there are some conditions.
Conclusion: You’re never to old to enjoy this scary fairytale.

boek 140: Inge & Mira, Marianne Fredriksson
Inge is tall and cool; Mira is petite and dynamic. When they meet, each is attracted by something special and different about the other. But friendships based on the attraction of opposites can be stormy, and theirs is no exception.
Conclusion: A difficult but nice book.

boek 141: The subtle knife, Philip Pullman
Lyra journeys to the shimmering, haunted otherworld called Cittágazze, where she meets Will Parry. Together they travel from world to world and discover an object of extraordinary power, and uncover the truth of their own destiny.
Conclusion: A great sequel to The golden compass.

boek 142: The amber spyglass, Philip Pullman
Lyra and Will are in unspeakable danger. With help from Iorek Byrnison the armored bear, other friends and two tiny Gallivespian spies, they must journey to a dank and gray-lit world where no living soul has ever gone.
Conclusion: A terrific ending to the His dark materials trilogy, with a surprising ending.

boek 114: Daughter of China, Meihong Xu & Larry Engelmann
The stunning true tale of a remarkable woman trained as an elite soldier in the Chinese army, her forbidden love for an American, and her seemingly impossible escape–with his help–from the nation to which she had pledged her life. Daughter of China offers a compelling look at life inside the rigid walls of Communist China. But, since Meihong also admits to be a great liar, it is sometimes hard to tell what’s real and what’s not.
Conclusion: I usually don’t finish biographies, but this one I did read completely.

boek 115: Third Girl, Agatha Christie
Three young women share a London flat. The first is a coolly efficient personal secretary; the second an artist. The third interrupts Hercule Poirot’s breakfast insisting she is a murderer – and then promptly disappears. Slowly, Poirot learns of the rumours surrounding the mysterious third girl, her family – and her disappearance. Yet hard evidence is needed before the great detective can pronounce her guilty, innocent or insane.
Conclusion: Another great book by Christie.

boek 116: Milkrun, Sarah Mlynowski
When Jackie’s boyfriend announces he is off to Thailand “to find himself”, Jackie is struck by a bizarre irony: her (almost) glittering career is devoted to editing romance novels; yet here she is single again. But soon enough, Jackie finds she has a talent for being single in the city. Ditching inhibitions along with her sensible wardrobe, she braves Boston’s hippest bars and discovers her true self-and a whole lot more…
Conclusion: Funny read, a bit predictable non the less.

boek 117: Nieuwe buren, Saskia Noort
Eva, een kleuterjuf, en Peter, chef sportredactie, betrekken na het overlijden van hun ongeboren dochter zonder veel enthousiasme hun pas opgeleverde villa in een Vinex-wijk. Tijdens een buurtborrel leren ze hun nieuwe buren kennen: het vrijgevochten stel Steef, ex-Dutchbatter en motoragent, en Rebecca, een sensuele thuiskapster, en hun zoontje Sem. Beide echtparen zijn op hun eigen manier op zoek naar geluk, dat in de maakbare samenleving om de hoek lijkt te liggen. Gezamenlijk verleggen ze hun grenzen, totdat ze erachter komen dat er geen weg meer terug is…
Conclusie: Spannend boek, af en toe op het gruwelijke af.

boek 118: Nachtgedachten, Michèle Lemieux
Fraai boek met tekeningen over een meisje dat in bed wakker ligt, terwijl ze zichzelf allerlei Grote Vragen stelt. Zoals “Zou je de oneindigheid kunnen zien als je een gat in de hemel maakt?” en “Als ik verdrietig ben, wordt het vloed in mij”.
Conclusie: Prachtig!

boek 119: De kleine man, Erich Kästner
Maxje Ukkeberger is een piepklein jongentje, opgeleid door professor goochelaar Jocus van pocus. Hij gaat in bad in een zeepbakje en slaapt in een luciferdoosje. In dit boek beleeft Maxje hele grote avonturen.
Conclusie: Zeer vermakelijk kinderboek.

boek 120: The Labours of Hercules, Agatha Christie
What do a lost Pekinese, a reputation poisoned by gossip, a man spiraling into madness, and a Russian countess in love have in common? Hercule Poirot. He decides to do twelve more cases before his retirement, and chooses the cases that resemble the twelve labours of Hercules, the Greek hero.
Conclusion: Nice short stories.

boek 121: De ontdekking van de curryworst, Uwe Timm
Lena Brücker uit Hamburg is volgens de verteller de ontdekker van de curryworst. Hij kent mevrouw Brücker uit zijn kinderjaren en bezoekt de inmiddels blinde en bejaarde vrouw in het verzorgingstehuis omdat hij wil weten hoe zij tot de ontdekking kwam. Het is een lang verhaal, dat Lena wel wil vertellen onder de voorwaarde dat de verteller voor taart zorgt. In zeven middagen met koffie en taart vertelt zij het verhaal over de oorlog, liefde en curryworst….
Conclusie: Bijzonder oprecht boek over de tweede wereldoorlog in Duitsland.

boek 122: Natural Causes, Michael Palmer
In this great medical thriller, the worlds of “regular” and alternative medicine are forced to work together when a couple of women suddenly get life-threatening clotting disorders in their third trimester of pregnancy. What do they have in common, and who is trying to hurt them?
Conclusion: Very nice read.

boek 123: The wizard’s daughter, Barbara Michaels
Set in Victorian London, this book about second sight and psychic powers is at times a difficult read. Marianne is an orphan, and by some believed to be the daughter of a powerful psychic. Marianne struggles with her Faith and her alleged powers. Will she find a modus vivendi?
Conclusion: Enthralling but difficult book.

boek 124: Laika tussen de sterren, Bibi Dumon Tak
In het kinderboekenweekgeschenk van 2006 vertelt Bibi Dumon Tak over dieren met een baan. Bijvoorbeeld over Laika de ruimtehond, speurhonden van de politie, dieren die in reclames te zien zijn, dolfijnen die ervoor zorgen dat kinderen leren met anderen om te gaan enzovoort.
Conclusie: Een prachtig non-fictie boekje.

boek 125: Staying at Daisy’s, Jill Mansell
Daisy MacLean runs the country house hotel owned by her flamboyant father, Hector. Enter a few locals, a few guests, a little intrigue, some love, and much more. Because that’s the thing about hotels, you never know who you’re going to meet. Or whether they’re going to stay…
Conclusion: Chick-lit at it’s best!

boek 126: The Austere Academy: Book The Fifth (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Lemony Snicket and Brett Helquist
This is the fifth book about Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, the unfortunate orphans. For the Baudelaires, school turns out to be another miserable episode in their unlucky lives.
Conclusion: Nice as always.

boek 127: Kruistocht in spijkerbroek, Thea Beckman
Klassieker. Dolf Vega raakt door middel van een tijdmachine verzeild in de middeleeuwen in een kinderkruistocht. Door zijn kennis uit de twintigste eeuw weet hij de kruisvaardertejs van veel onheil te behoeden, maar hij moet wel opletten niet te heidens te zijn in de ogen van de vrome dertiende eeuwers. Gaan ze het halen? En zal Dolf ooit weer thuis komen?
Conclusie: Geweldig boek.

boek 105: Want to play?, PJ Tracy
Monkeewrench is a software company that created a serial killer detective game. Suddenly, when the game goes online, someone starts duplicating the fictional murders in real life, down to the last detail. Grace McBride and her crew/friends warn the authorities, but they have dark secrets themselves… By the time the police realize what’s happening, three people are dead, and with seventeen more murder scenarios available online, there are seventeen more potential victims. It takes a rural Wisconsin sheriff, two Minneapolis police detectives, and Grace’s gang to find the killer. But how many more scenes will be acted out before they do so?
Conclusion: A terrific thriller, the first of this mother-daughter writing duo.

boek 106: A prayer for Owen Meany, John Irving
Owen Meany is a dwarfish boy with a strange voice (WRITTEN IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS) who accidentally kills his best friend’s mom with a baseball and believes -accurately- that he is an instrument of God, to be redeemed by martyrdom. Johnny Wheelwright, the best friend, tells the story of their shared and seperate pasts and his own present in bits and pieces. The story is breathtaking, beautiful but sad, funny but horrible, all in one.
Conclusion: One of the best books I’ve ever read.

boek 107: Gemis, Manon Uphoff
Mara is dertien, net verhuisd, enorm egocentrisch en mist elke ouderlijke sturing. Ze doet maar wat, heeft seks, een vriendje waar ze macht over heeft. Het boek beschrijft een periode uit haar leventje, zonder echt ergens naar toe te gaan.
Conclusie: Goed geschreven, maar onduidelijk boek over een naar meisje.

boek 108: Marrow, Tiffanie Darke
This book satirises the modern phenonmenon of the celebrity chef, and weaves a clever plot about love and dishonesty around it. Meet Seamus Bull: owner of a restaurant with two Michelin stars, a bully in his kitchen, a bull in the bedroom, Irish, sexy, and hungry for more. Enter another chef, a terrible review, a powerful PR woman with a hidden agenda and a Fench girl from his past… In his stride for more, Seamus will end up with less and less…
Conclusion: This book is sometimes sleezy, sometimes funny and mostly delicious.

boek 109: The villa of mysteries, David Hewson
In Rome, detective Nic Costa returns to the job and lands himself a new partner and a strange case. A girl is found in peat, just 16 years after her death. She appears to have taken part in an ancient Dionysian ritual that leaves nothing to the imagination. And now, another young woman is missing…
Conclusion: A nice partly historical thriller, even though the ending is somewhat vague.

boek 110: Rode rozen en tortilla’s, Laura Esquivel
Magisch-realistisch verhaal over een jonge Mexicaanse, Tita, die niet met haar geliefde Pedro mag trouwen, omdat zij als jongste dochter bij haar moeder op de hacienda moet blijven. Het boek beschrijft de familiegeschiedenis in een bijzonder tijdsperspectief. Het bereiden van gerechten en de invloed die de gerechten hebben neemt een grote plaats in in het verhaal. Elk hoofdstuk bevat een recept.
Conclusie: Prachtig boek, een echte aanrader.

boek 111: Once upon silettos, Shanna Swendson
Katie Chandler is back, with more magical things happening around her. There seems to be a spy inside Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc. and Katie, being immune to magic and all, is set to the case by no other then Merlin himself. While sleuthing, she suddenly finds het immunity tempered with, so she has to resort to common sense and natural insticts. During all this, her parents are visiting New York for the first time in their lives, and her mom seems strange things everywhere…
Conclusion: Very funny, I can’t wait for part three which will be available in May 2007.

boek 112: Korstmos, Katrien Vervaele
Een week uit het leven van een anonieme ik-figuur. Ze is jong, weggelopen van huis, en tast haar grenzen af. Haar diepere gevoelens deelt ze niet met anderen, ook niet met de lezer. Een jongen die korstmossen bestudeert wordt haar redding.
Conclusie: Matig boeiend tienerboek.

boek 90: Time stops for no mouse, Michael Hoeye
This is a very nice childrens mystery novel about a mouse, Hermux Tantamoq, watchmaker, who gets sucked into adventures when a nice lady-aviator srops off het watch at his workshop. First of a series; I’m looking forward to reading the other books.
Conclusion: Very nice read, sometimes a bit scary.

boek 91: Girl anatomy, Rebecca Bloom
Lilly, a neurotic twenty-something, still a girl at heart, is trying to grow up and stop throwing huge tantrums when she’s unhappy. The blurb: “A hip and heartwarming story of what it means to be a girl and what it takes to become a woman.”
Conclusion: Not great, but not terrible either.

boek 92: De vlinderplaag, Maria Stahlie
In deze bundel staan twee lange, bevreemdende verhalen. Plaats van handeling is Parijs, in augustus, broeierig en vol vlinders.
Conclusie: Dit boek moest uit en had wel iets, maar of ik het echt mooi vond weet ik niet.

boek 93: Holes, Louis Sachar
Stanley Yelnats gets a choice: to go to a juvenile correction facility or jail. He chooses the camp, in which he has to dig a hole every day. But why? And for whom? FInd out the truth with this brave young boy.
Conclusion: Very good read, I found it hard to put this book down.

boek 94: The doctor game, Howard Olgin
An intensely realistic, no punches-pulled story of medicine…They start as three medical school students and go through a period of acute personal and professional conflict. One of them became a lawyer specializing in malpractice. And then, another makes a mistake, or didn’t he? Once friends, now they stand on opposite sides…
Conclusion: This book is not the medical thriller I expected from Olgin; it’s a legal thriller as well.

boek 95: Koraal en geraniums, Adriaan van Dis
Twee reisverhalen van Adriaan van Dis in een literair juweeltje.
Conclusie: Makkelijk klein boekje.

boek 96: The Murder at the Vicarage, Agatha Christie
In St. Mary Mead, no one is more despised than Colonel Protheroe. Even the local vicar has said that killing him would be doing a service to the townsfolk. So when Protheroe is found murdered in the same vicar’s study and two different people confess to the crime, it’s time for the elderly spinster Jane Marple to exercise her abilities, which until now have been focused on domestic mysteries.
Conclusion: A very nice example of Christie’s style.

boek 97: To kill a mockingbird, Harper Lee
Set in the small Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird follows three years in the life of 8-year-old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus–three years punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman.
Conclusion: This is a difficult book, mostly because of the subject, which unfortunately is still current in this century.

boek 98: Moeilijk te geloven, Suzanne van der Schot
Een jong vrouw vertelt over haar zoektocht naar de juiste plek om haar leven door te brengen. Ze gaat naar Parijs om als postulante mee te leven bij een religieuse gemeenschap. Ze beschrijft haar twijfels, de goede en mindere momenten, en de dagelijkse gang van zaken binnen deze orde. En dan moet ze beslissen: wil ik wel of niet intreden?
Conclusie: Dit boek viel mij erg tegen.

boek 99: Northern lights, Philip Pullman
Lyra Belacqua is a precocious orphan growing up within the precincts of Oxford University. There, people there each have a personal daemon, the manifestation of their soul in animal form. Lyra’s carefree existence changes forever when she and her daemon, Pantalaimon, first prevent an assassination attempt against her uncle, the powerful Lord Asriel, and then overhear a secret discussion about a mysterious entity known as Dust. Soon she and Pan are swept up in a dangerous game involving disappearing children, a beautiful woman with a golden monkey daemon, a trip to the far north, and a set of allies ranging from “gyptians” to witches to an armor-clad polar bear.
Conclusion: Captivating. I will definately read the other books in the series.

boek 100: The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Agatha Christie
Christie’s very first novel. In the midst of World War I, the residents of Styles wake one morning to find Emily Inglethorpe has been fatally poisoned. Captain Hastings, staying with the family, enlists the help of his old friend, Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. With the evidence mounting against one member of the family, Poirot uses his technique to prove who really killed Emily.
Conclusion: A great read!

boek 101: Someone like you, Cathy Kelly
They meet eachother on holiday in Egypt: Emma, Leonie and Hannah. And they all want just one thing in life – and then they’ll be truly happy. For one, it’s a baby and a way to escape her dominant father, for the other true love, and the third is looking for independence (and not for a man). Their friendship grows as they fight their own battles, supported by the others.
Conclusion: Very nice example of an “intelligent chick-lit novel”.

boek 102: Paardevijgen, Hylkje Goïnga
Bundel met korte verhalen over Martha, een vrouw die telkens in bijzondere situaties terecht komt. Vertaald uit het Fries door de schrijfster zelf.
Conclusie: Wel aardig, hoewel sommige verhalen wel erg bizar zijn.

boek 103: After the Funeral, Agatha Christie
Richard Abernathie died a natural death – or so his family believes. But right after his funeral, his sister Cora remarks “It was hushed up very nicely … but he was murdered, wasn’t he?” At the time no one takes her seriously. But the next day, Cora is found brutally murdered with a hatchet, and the family lawyer turns to Hercule Poirot for help.
Conclusion: Another great example of Christie’s ability to make you follow red herrings.

boek 81: Het motet voor de kardinaal, Theun de Vries
Een kleine jongen uit de Nederlanden wordt meegenomen na een veldslag, als kadootje. Na een woelig bestaan in de krijgsmacht weet hij te ontsnappen en ontdekt hij zijn roeping: de nieuwe muziek. In Italië is de renaissance in volle gang en ontmoeten we figuren als Leonardo uit Vinci, Josquin des Prés en Michaelangelo.
Conclusie: Hoewel dit boek al wat ouder is, leest het erg fijn. Aanrader voor liefhebbers van deze rijke historische periode.

boek 82: The boy in the striped pyjamas, John Boyne
Very confronting book about a young German boy, Bruno, whose father suddenly gets promoted, so the family has to move. We find out about his life in a way only a nine-year-old could show and tell it. I don’t want to say anything else about it; you should read it “unspoild”.
Conclusion: Definately a must-read!

boek 83: Piranha to scurfy and other short stories, Ruth Rendell
A collection of eight short stories and a novella by the queen of psychological thrillers and strange plots. Most stories are true psychological thrillers, including two about revenge, but there is also a horror story included in this book.
(In Dutch, this book is called De strandbutler en andere verhalen)
Conclusion: A great but somewhat disturbing read.

boek 84: De Garnalenpelster, Nilgün Yerli
In 93 anectdotes en 9 recepten vertelt Yerli over haar liefde voor haar moeder, wennen in Nederland, de liefde en cultuurverschillen. Af en toe is het erg van de hak op de tak, een beetje cabaret-achtig.
Conclusie: Leuk voor tussendoor; het boek geeft een beeld hoe het voor immigranten was om in Nederland te komen en tussen twee culturen te wonen.

boek 85: Orfe, Cynthia Voigt
In a story derived from the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, Enny recounts the story of her best friend, Orfe, a talented artist known for the beauty of her music; Orfe’s romance with Yuri, a recovering drug addict; and Orfe’s doomed struggle to save Yuri–and herself.
Conclusion: Lovely read, well written modern take on an ultimate lovestory.

boek 86: I don’t know how she does it, Allison Pearson
In a novel that is at once upraoriously funny and achingly sad, Allison Pearson captures the guilty secret lives of working mothers: the selfrecrimination, the comic deceptios, the forgeries, the giddy exhaustion and the despair.
Conclusion: This book is a good read, but I felt very tired if I read too much in one go.

boek 87: De medische encyclopedie, Marco Kamphuis
Martin Haas lijdt niet alleen aan hypochondrie, maar ook aan talloze dwangneurosen. In een poging tot genezing wendt hij zich tot professionele hulp. Deel van de therapie is iedere dag een verplicht hoofdstuk uit de medische encyclopedie, zonder meteen op tilt te slaan…
Conclusie: Grappige novelle die in Nijmegen speelt.

boek 88: Spijkerschrift, Kader Abdolah
Deels autobigrafisch boek over een doofstomme man in Iran, die met de hulp van een wijze oom een bestaan opbouwd en een gezin sticht. Het verhaal gaat voornamelijk over de vader, die in spijkerschrift een ‘dagboek’ bijhoudt, en de oudste zoon, die betrokken raakt bij het verzet en moet vluchten. Na de dood van zijn vader krijgt de zoon het dagboek, waarna hij probeert het verhaal van zijn vader, zijn volk en zichzelf op papier te zetten. Dit levert mooie beschrijvingen van Iran en Nederland op, evenals een fraai tijdsbeeld.
Conclusie: Toegankelijk en indrukwekkend boek, waar ik veel uit geleerd heb.

boek 67: De weduwnaar, Kluun
Logisch vervolg op Komt een vrouw bij de dokter. Ook dit boek gaf weer allerlei emoties, varierend van lachstuipen tot “wat is die man toch een enorme #*#$”. Het begin sluit naadloos aan op KEVBDD en was, wat mij betreft, het meest emotioneel. Ik vond het mooi om te lezen hoe iemand een ontwikkeling doormaakt.
Conclusie: Aanrader, maar lees eerst Komt een vrouw bij de dokter.

boek 68: Pim, Frits en Ida deel 3, 6, 7 en 8, Godfried Bomans
Jeugdsentiment! Ik kende een aantal verhaallijnen nog!
Conclusie: Ik vond het fijn om deze boekjes weer te zien.

boek 69: Meow Te Ching, Meow Tzu
Boekje vol kattenwijsheden. Sommigen erg leuk, sommigen minder. Favoriet van Chico: Making a show of oneself is a necessary art of living.
Conclusie: Grappig, maar niet meer dan dat.

boek 70: Freaks, Geeks & Asperger Syndroom, Luke Jackson
Self-help guide for surviving puberty while having Asperger. Luke is only thirtheen years old and this is his second book. He explains a lot about autism and related disorders.
Conclusion: Useful for anyone who knows people with Asperger, works with them, or just wants to know more about it.

boek 71: Misadventures, Sylvia Smith
Sylvia Smith relates small incidents from her “normal” life, spent in temporary jobs and rented accommodations. Some of these incidents, or “misadventures,” are very funny, some thought-provoking, some banal, some plain boring.
Conclusion: I cannot believe this actually was a bestseller. Total waste of time and paper.

boek 72: The Miserable Mill: Book The Fourth (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Lemony Snicket and Brett Helquist
Part four of the Baudelaire saga. This book contains such unpleasantries as a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident resulting in injury, and coupons.
Conclusion: As always a great read.

boek 73: Gods Callgirl, Carla van Raay
Als achttienjarige gaat ze het klooster in, op haar vierendertigste begint ze aan een carrière als prostituee. Gods callgirl is een verpletterend eerlijk verslag van een verbijsterend leven, waarbij traumatische ervaringen een leven blijken te bepalen.
Conclusie: Indrukwekkend verslag van een moeilijk leven. Knap dat je daar een boek van durft te maken.

boek 74: Soms zijn dingen mooier als er mensen klappen, Ernest van der Kwast
Voor de buitenwereld heeft Ben alles wat je maar zou kunnen wensen, maar het doet hem niets. In het boek worstelt hij met zichzelf, zijn afkomst, verleden en toekomst. Persoonlijk vind ik Ben een naar, megalomaan mannetje.
Conclusie: Bijzonder knap geschreven boek (debuut), maar echt mooi vond ik het niet.

boek 75: Want dit is mijn lichaam, Renate Dorrestein
Leuke novelle over een rare familie, waarin drie generaties (en de nieuwe liefde van vader) elkaar in de haren zitten, juist omdat ze van elkaar houden (of niet).
Conclusie: Prettig leesvoer.

boek 76: Die kat van dat mens, Yvonne Keuls
Serie columns over verschillende huisdieren die een plaatsje kregen in het gezin Keuls: poezebeesten, mensenkinderen, pratende parkieten en een hond.
Conclusie: Leuk voor tussendoor.

boek 77: A Season for the Dead, David Hewson
In the Vatican and Rome, people are murdered, in scenes resembling the deads of some early Christian martyrs. Who did this, and why? Detective Costa and his partner Luca Rossi try to find out, but at what costs?
Conclusion: Great thriller, nothing like Dan Brown’s, since this one is way more intelligent and better written.

boek 78: Ik ben omringd door debielen en ik voel me goed, Stefan Nieuwenhuis
De sarcastische en narcistische David wordt ontslagen, terwijl hij vind dat hij het veel beter doet dan de “kneuzen” om hem heen. Ik heb me wel vermaakt met dit boek, waarin David de ene na de andere stommiteit uithaalt om zijn eigenwaarde opgekrikt te houden en vooral niet minder te zijn dan al die mensen die hij zo min vindt.
Conclusie: Vermakelijk, maar je moet er wel voor in de stemming zijn.

boek 79: The Dyke and the Dybbuk, Ellen Galford
Novel about Rainbow Rosenbloom, lesbian London taxi-driver who meets a dybbuk, the well-known demon of ancient Jewish lore. I like the combination of amusement and education this book offers. I had some giggles, some frowns and enjoyed reading it. And I’m in love with the title; either the author or an editor came up with something brilliant.
Conclusion: Recommanded read, but sometimes a little chaotic.

boek 57: Princess Academy, Shannon Hale
The thought of being a princess never occurred to the girls living on Mount Eskel. Most plan to work in the quarry like the generations before them. When it is announced that the prince will choose a bride from their village, 14-year-old Miri, who thinks she is being kept from working in the quarry because of her small stature, believes that this is her opportunity to prove her worth to her father. At princess academy, she learns about the world of the lowlanders, herself, and her people… and they get to know her!
Conclusion: Nice girl-novel (10 and older, I think), well written.

boek 58: How I live now, Meg Rosoff
This book which was written for teenagers tells the story of Daisy, who spends a summer with her British cousins. This summer changes their lives, because a terrorist attack marks the start of a new World War. It’s a story about love, lust, loss and loyalty, in which Daisy tells us how she lives now.
Conclusion: Well worth your time, recommended.

boek 59: Dood door schuld?, Johan Diepstraten en Roel Bossink
Het is de grootste treinramp in de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Maar wat is er nu gebeurd? En wie heeft er wanneer geschoten? En wat hebben drugstransporten vanaf de Antillen er mee te maken? Doris, die toevallig in de buurt was en wiens beste vriendin omkwam bij de ramp, komt het te weten.
Conclusie: Ik denk dat de doelgroep (tieners van 13-15 jaar) het wel een leuk boek zouden kunnen vinden. Ik niet.

boek 60: Crazy Games, Sandra Glover
Brad doesn’t want to encourage a friendship with Colford, a loner who seems to live in a fantasy world, but Colford always has the latest computer games. However, the games start to drift from harmless fantasy to dangerous reality as Colford begins to find it difficult to distinguish between the present and the past. And when he begins wearing World War I army uniforms, Colford really is on the edge.
Conclusion: Another teenager read, but more for the lads this time. Recommended if you’re into action and/or war games.

boek 61: The Shadow of the Wind, Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Barcelona, just after the second world war. The Cemetery of Forgotten Books is a library tended by Barcelona’s guild of rare-book dealers as a repository for books forgotten by the world. This is where the enthralling story about David, who finds a book by the author Julian Carax, starts. Before Daniel knows it he has opened a door into one of Barcelona’s darkest secrets, an epic story of murder, magic, madness and doomed love.
Conclusion: Probably the best book I’ve read this year. Highly recommended.

boek 62: Road to Avonlea: Of Corsets and Secrets and True True Love, Fiona McHugh
Romantic and funny teenager novel, said to be based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels (Anne of Green Gables).
Conclusion: It’s not bad, but a little out-dated.

boek 63: Snakes and Earrings, Hitomi Kanehara
Eighteen-year-old Liu runs away from home to live on the streets and answer to no one. She befriends Ama, a boy whose red mohawk, forked tongue, and multiple piercings seduce her, and Shiba, a tattoo artist whose cold eyes give no hint of the secrets he may be harbouring. When their reckless behaviour breeds dangerous consequences, Liu finds herself forced to choose between good and evil, life and death, love and hate.
Conclusion: I liked it, but it is a weird book.

boek 64: The Mango Season, Amulya Malladi
Priya returns to India at the height of Mango Season after seven years in the United States to tell something to her family: she has violated one of the primary commandments every Indian parent enforces on a child: “Do not find yourself some foreign man/woman to marry”. But she finds her family’s cooking up a surprise dish of their own. Add dashes of other family drama, and you’ve got one spicy dish.
Conclusion: Lovely read, includes recipes!

boek 65: The Wide Window: Book The Third (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Lemony Snicket and Brett Helquist
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are kind-hearted and quick-witted, but their lives are filled with bad luck and misery. All of the stories about these three children are unhappy and wretched, and this one includes a hurricane, a signalling device, hungry leeches, cold cucumber soup, a horrible villain, and a doll named Pretty Penny.
Conclusion: Another nice one.

boek 47: Stuck on you, Patti Berg
Mystery bookstore owner Scarlett O’Malley has an American flag charm dangling from her belly button ring, a mop of flaming red hair (which she thinks looks like an exploding firework), and a vivid imagination. She sees trouble lurking around every corner… and when a sexy and sensitive hunk (also an ex-cop) named Logan Wolfe shows up in town, she’s sure he’s out to scam all the wealthy widows in Plentiful, Wyoming. This book is not a chick-lit novel and shouldn’t be read by anyone under 18.
Conclusion: Worth a try, if you like romance and sleuthing combined.

boek 48: Crazy for you, Jennifer Crusie
Quinn McKenzie has always lived what she calls a “beige” life. She’s dating the world’s nicest guy, she had a good job as a high school art teacher, she’s surrounded by family and friends who rely on her, and she’s bored to the point of insanity. But when Quinn decides to changes her life by adopting a stray dog over everyone’s objections, everything begins to spiral out of control. Now she’s coping with dog-napping, breaking and entering, seduction, sabotage, stalking, more secrets than she really wants to know, and two men who are suddenly crazy…for her.
Conclusion: Great read in which the main characters are just a little older and deeper than your average chick-lit.

boek 49: Ongeneeslijk optimistisch, Karel Glastra van Loon
Verzameling columns van Karel over zijn ziek-zijn, maar ook over hoe het familieleven doorgaat. Het boek beschrijft de periode van de eerste uiting van zijn hersentumor tot en met zijn overlijden, in totaal een maand of 17.
Conclusie: Erg mooi en ontroerend, oprechte verhalen.

boek 50: Het bosgraf, Simone van der Vlugt
Kort verhaal dat een beetje doet denken aan de verhalen van Roald Dahl: het is allemaal mysterieus en je wordt op het verkerde been gezet.
Conclusie: Lekker voor tussendoor.

boek 51: Terug naar de kust, Saskia Noort
Dit is meer een psychologische thriller dan een literair werk. Het verhaal over Maria, een alleenstaande moeder die na de breuk met haar vriend en een abortus bedreigd wordt, is spannend maar chaotisch. De dader blijft lang verborgen en het motief wordt mij niet helemaal duidelijk, maar het boek las wel vlot.
Conclusie: Geen literatuur, maar wel een aardige psychologische thriller.

boek 52: Medisch mishandelen, René Steenhorst
René Steenhorst is medisch journalist bij dagblad De Telegraaf. Met de hulp van twee letselschadejuristen en anesthesist en enfant terriblè Smalhout geeft hij in dit boek uit begin jaren 90 een analyse van medische fouten. De verhalen zijn inderdaad gruwelijk en het gebrek aan communicatie en openheid stuitend. Helaas kan het ook niet echt anders: medisch personeel is menselijk, mensen maken nu eenmaal fouten, en de verzekeraars eisen dat artsen niet toegeven dat ze een fout gemaakt hebben. Lastig.
Conclusie: Voor mensen die van medische gruwelverhalen houden.

boek 53: Well-Schooled in Murder, Elizabeth George
This mystery novel in the tradition of the whodunnit revolves around the strict yet unwritten code of behaviour prevalent at independent boarding schools which says that under no circumstances must pupils ever tell on their schoolmates, no matter what they have done. Even if it involves murder…
Conclusion: Very well written and a great thriller.

boek 54: Tussen personen, Ineke Walravens
Een verwarrend boek over hermafrodiet Anne, die afwisselend met hij en zij aangeduid wordt. Anne is opgevoed als meisje maar heeft als man tijdens carnaval een paar bijzondere ervaringen. En dan komt de vraag of ze als man of vrouw verder wil…
Conclusie: Onwaarschijnlijk verhaal met wat weinig diepgang.

boek 55: Ice Bound, Jerri Nielsen
Ice Bound is the autobiography of Dr Jerri Nielsen, who diagnosed herself with breast cancer while wintering on the South Pole as the only MD. The book describes life at the Pole as well as the struggle for connections with the outside world, treatment and finally a way out of the Pole, which is completely disconnected from the civilized world for 8 months a year.
Conclusion: A compelling book for anyone who likes extremes, both of human nature and environment.

boek 40: Only you can save mankind, Terry Pratchett
Johnny Maxwell is about to set the new high score on the computer game Only You Can Save Mankind when suddenly the alien fleet in his sights sends him a message: “We surrender.” But aliens in computer games aren’t supposed to surrender – they’re supposed to die! But it’s all just a game anyway, isn’t it? Isn’t it?
Conclusion: I did finish the book, but it’s no way near the Discworld series imho.

boek 41: Saartje Tadema, Thea Beckman
Saartje is 7 jaar als ze terechtkomt in het Amsterdamse burgerweeshuis.Keer op keer wordt haar verteld dat weeskinderen vooral dankbaar en gehoorzaam moete zijn. En dat zijn niet bepaald Saartjes sterke kanten. Ze worstelt zich door een aantal moeilijke jaren heen, reikhalzend uitziend naar het moment dat ze het weeshuis kan verlaten. Het beeld dat Beckman schetst van het leven in het Burgerweeshuis komt heel historisch correct over.
Conclusie: Wederom een mooi jeugdboek van Thea Beckman, behalve het voor mij het te zoetsappige einde, maar ja, je kan niet altijd alles hebben…

boek 42: The Undomestic Goddess, Sophie Kinsella
Samantha Sweeting is rocketing up the legal ladder. But when she makes a career-threatening mistake, she walks out of the office and quite mistakenly into a new life… as a housekeeper. We read how she gets her act together, learns to cook, falls in love, and discovers some things…
Conclusion: I would love to read a sequel, just to find out if it is possible to end a high-flung career to settle down and cook.

boek 43: The Grenadillo Box, Janet Gleeson
A nice whodunnit which makes you think of many different suspects with every clue found and gets you into the era of Chippendale. This book has everything I like in a historical murder mystery: characters who seem to come alive, enough cruelty to make me shiver sometimes, a detailed description of the surroundings and way of life in said time period, some love interests, twists ans turns in the plot and such.
Conclusion: Scary at times, but beautifully written. I highly recommend this book.

boek 44: Beach House, R.L. Stine
Teenager thriller about a deserted beach house and the awful things that happened there, both in the present as three years ago. With a lot of gory details, like you’d suspect from a book in the Goosebumps series.
Conclusion: Good in-between-books read, not brilliant, but okay.

boek 45: Death from the woods, Brigitte Aubert
Elise Andrioli had it all until she was caught in a bomb explosion and left widowed, blind, mute and quadriplegic. Taken back to her home near Paris, her life does not become any calmer. A serial killer is murdering young boys in the woods, and Elise gets involved when a young girl tells her more and more details.
Conclusion: Very mysterious book with a strong yet feeble main character and a surprising ending.

boek 33: Stargirl, Jerry Spinelli
A story about a girl who dares to be different, told by her friend who himself doesn’t have the guts to go for it. It shows the lifes of a lot of ordinary and one special teenager and the complications being different in teenager-world will get you in.
Conclusion: Sweet and funny, but also painfully close to the truth.

boek 34: Chameleon, Ken McClure
Women are dying in Kerr Memorial Hospital. They are dying from post operative wound infections which are resistant to antibiotics, and the authorities cannot find the source. At the same time, a psychopathic killer is running amok, committing brutal murders in the town.
The Home Office send an outsider, surgeon Scott Jamieson, to investigate. Jamieson soon finds himself in a maelstrom of accusation and counter accusation. Is this outbreak the result of deliberate contamination, or just a freak strain of bacteria? He begins to suspect that the truth might be far more horrific than anyone could have imagined…
Conclusion: I love medical thrillers, and I loved this one as well, but you need an interest in the behaviour of bacteria to really understand this book.

boek 35: Around the world in 80 dates, Jennifer Cox
This book is part travel guide, part relationship primer, as it mixes wry dating realities with preposterously romantic settings and a slightly more than backpacker budget. Author Jennifer Cox, an experienced travel journalist, gets friends around the world to act as matchmaker for an 80-date spree, and the result is entertaining. Yes, she does find him. And yes, they are currently still together, according to the same source that has information about the upcoming movie based on this book.
Conclusion: Funny, breezy read, an ideal holiday book.

boek 36: The Knowledge: The Gobsmacking Galaxy, Kjartan Poskitt
I’ve read this “science for kids-book” like a beginners guide to space. It explains “what all the different lumps and bumbs that float around the sky are, it tells you how to get there and what you’ll find when you arrive”. In a funny way, it tells lots of really satisfying facts, but sometimes you have to look hard for the thruth.
Conclusion: Nice as a “Galaxy for Dummies”, but for real science, you’ll have to find another book to study after reading this one.

boek 37: The Zahir, Paulo Coelho
I borrowed this book, whose title means “the present” or “unable to go unnoticed” in Arabic, from one of the girls with whom I traveled in Libya. Subtitled A Novel of Obsession, this tale is the philosophical and spiritual chronicle of one man’s quest for self-discovery. After the disappearance of his wife, an unnamed best-selling author has to find himself and come to peace with the past, before having a chance to find her again.
Conclusion: This book forces you to think about your own life and your own obsessions. I’d recommend it, but I didn’t particularly like the last chapter. This was my first Coelho, but it will not be my last.

boek 38: Someone like you, Roald Dahl
This is a collection of short stories, the Dahl way: with surprises and horror around the corner. In “Taste”, the stakes of a dinner-party bet reach distasteful heights; a wife serves up a new dish in “Lamb to the Slaughter”; and layers of deceit are stripped away in “Nunc Dimittis”..
Conclusion: Great read, but not to be read in one go, since you’ll start thinking: “Okay, what will be the catch this time?”.
